Beau

Lance and I don’t have any time alone before the game on Saturday.

It’s probably a good thing. As much as I’ve thought about that kiss—as much as I’ve jacked to the fantasy of what might’ve happened if we weren’t interrupted—I know I wouldn’t be getting any work done at our training session. At least, not any work related to football.

Our second game is against Ole Miss, and even though they lost their first, the money’s still on them to win. They have a stronger D than Vanderbilt, so we never really get the chance to steamroll them like we did in our first game.

Instead, we use what Lance taught us. We’re calm and collected, focused on whatever gains we can get, rather than holding out for insane, game-swinging plays. Slow and steady gets us over that goal line, and in the end, it’s enough to win the game by 14 points.

This time last year, we were already 0-2 and facing a certain loss the week after with the Vols on our schedule. The celebration that kicks off right after the final whistle is blown really isn’t so fucking hard to understand.

Like a moth drawn right into a flame, I move to the center of it, fully prepared to get my buzz on at The Top. Maybe hoping it’ll break down the last of my inhibitions and I’ll find myself back at Lance’s place later.

But Lance catches up to me outside the locker room, his blue eyes sparkling with the victory.

“Hey, you got a few minutes? There’s somebody I want you to meet.”

That gets me curious as hell, so I follow him out to the parking lot where I see a big, broad dude leaning against his truck. Seriously, he’s wide enough that he almost takes up the whole side of the cab. When we get closer, I realize who he is.

Xavier Delgado. Holy shit. He’s one of the most powerful LBs in the league right now. He’s turned the tide of whole games for the Jags before by completely shutting down quarterbacks.

And he’s standing in the Eastshore parking lot, just chilling.

“Hey. You must be Beau Woodridge. Good game today.”

Not only is he here, but he actually watched us play? This has turned into the fucking Twilight Zone.

“Hey,” I say, trying to find my voice.

I don’t know why I was able to function around Lance and not Xavier. Maybe because Lance has this easygoing way about him, whereas Xavier just screams badass football player. Every muscle in his body openly advertises how powerful he is.

“Don’t let his looks fool you,” Lance says. “Xavi’s a good guy. He helped me get settled in the new place.”

“Only 'cause I didn’t have anything better to do that day,” Xavier says with a grin.

That expression is what ultimately makes me loosen up. It softens his features, shows me that he’s not that much older than me. And that he isn’t just a one-man drive-killing machine. At least not while he’s off the field. I’d hate to be a QB right about now.
